The inflated high property tax in Bodrum has caused disputes and numerous appeals from the inhabitants of this region to the authorities.
Before the elections, the candidate for mayor of Bodrum from the People's Alliance, Mehmet Tosun, beat the thresholds of the Bodrum Agricultural Chamber and the local tax inspectorate, representing the interests of citizens who complained to him during the election campaign. Mr Tosun recalled that taxes across the country have been rising rapidly since 2021, since the pandemic; but it was in Bodrum that the municipality increased them by 300-1,200%.
Moreover, a number of citizens pay a "land tax" for land that cannot be used for housing in order to rent it out, as it has a different status: not "for residential development", but "for fields" or something else. In addition, the prices of land in Bodrum and local residential real estate are high.
Thus, Mehmet Tosun drew the attention of the authorities to the fact that during the upcoming revaluation of tax rates, which will take place in 2026, taxes should be reduced or adjusted in such a way that people do not suffer, for example, to provide for restructuring options.
He promised to continue working on this issue bringing the point of view of the residents of Bodrum to the Ministry of Finance.
New property taxes are being discussed in Turkey.
