The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change has prepared a new Regulation on the principles of design, calculation and construction of wooden buildings. It was published in the Official Gazette, and the new rules on wooden buildings come into effect on January 1, 2025.
The main reason is to ensure safety. If the new rules are unclear, Turkish building standards will be used as a basis, and if not, European ones will be used.
The regulation defines the basic principles of structural design, material properties, calculations for strength to underground shocks, fire safety, insulation quality, etc.
This issue began to be given special attention, as the authorities will erect buildings, including of a "mixed" type, on wooden supports in earthquake-prone areas.
The Sabah newspaper published an updated list of Istanbul by AFAD a couple of months ago clarifying the areas most at risk of a possible earthquake. Unfortunately, every third building in the metropolis is not so stable, but the city's transformation programme is in full swing. Moreover, the key attention in this sense is paid to large cities that are more earthquake-prone than others, including Izmir.
