According to official data published by the Disaster Insurance Institute (DASK), half of the buildings destroyed by the earthquake were not insured. Moreover, of the affected provinces, the residents of Diyarbakir were the most careless in this regard.
1,118 million residences out of 2,175 in 10 earthquake-affected provinces did not have mandatory DASK insurance. 48.6% is the average for all provinces.
In the epicenter itself – Kahramanmarash – only 113 thousand residences out of 210 thousand had insurance; this is 53.8%. However, in some provinces it is much lower than even the notorious "half": These are Hatay (40.1%) and Diyarbakir (33.7%).
The most responsible were those who lived on the territory of Gaziantep: here the level of insurance was 65.4% - 219 thousand out of 339 thousand residences had earthquake insurance.
The average level of insurance across Turkey is now 55%. Recall that over the past 20 years, 920 earthquakes have occurred on the territory of the country. And this is not counting small tremors here and there, which happen several times a week.
Compensation for earthquake damage was paid to approximately 105 thousand families whose residences were destroyed or damaged due to the violence of the natural elements.
The largest payments were made in 2020, when 164 earthquakes took place: in that year, the beneficiaries received 0.969 billion Turkish lira (TL) as compensation for damage caused to more than 60 thousand residences.
Last year – 2022 - TL 183 million was paid under insurance for 17,438 damaged residences.
In March 2022, the national average insurance rate was 52.6%. And in 2021, the most responsible were the residents of Bolu province, where 97% of residential buildings had DASK insurance.
Moreover, since the same year, insurers have begun to recommend including in the policy all the property of the house up to the dishes.
