The Institute of Human Rights Equality of Turkey (TIHEK) has signed a new important decision regarding the terms of the lease.
The reason for this was a recent precedent when a fine was imposed on the landlord and intermediaries. The reason was the refusal to single tenants: on the website, in the description of the rented residential property, it was written "We do not rent non-family housing."
According to TIHEK, a well-known housing rental portal that placed such an advertisement demonstrated discrimination based on marital status.
The individual was fined 5,958 TL, and the website that placed this ad was immediately fined 89,571 TL.
TIHEK has the right to impose administrative fines of up to 90,000 TL on complaints about websites or media outlets that place discriminatory ads, such as "There are no apartments for rent for students, bachelors (and similar restrictions)."
President of TIHEK Muharrem Kilic said that after the earthquake in Kahramanmarash, which led to massive internal migration across Turkey - from province to province - the Institute received a lot of allegations of discrimination on age, gender and family grounds.
And now, after a precedent-setting decision, the owners may be wary of putting such restrictions.
The Turkish authorities have now thoroughly strengthened control over the observance of the rights of tenants. Recent developments in this area include:
owners who welcome illegal immigrants were fined a quarter of a million;
you can go to jail for overstating rental rates;
dishonest neighbors will now be reasoned with by intermediaries;
making noise at home in Turkey has become expensive.
