The consequences of the earthquake in February 2023 lie in the negligence of developers or the authorities. The inspections revealed that up to 30 per cent of the Turkish population lived in buildings that either partially or completely did not comply with the regulations or were built illegally without a permit. "We are not afraid of earthquakes: we are afraid of bad buildings," experts comment.

In total, about 40 million people in Turkey live in 4 million apartments or houses that have no right to exist. Many of these buildings — especially unauthorized ones — are unsafe. Of these, 33% are located in the northern part of the Marmara Sea. The rest are built in Ankara, Bursa, Adana, Izmir, Erzurum, Diyarbakir, and in smaller cities.

The fact is that some of these illegal or improperly designed houses built in the wrong place or in the wrong way, are not some poor houses, but villas and multi-storey buildings.

The media reported that up to 3 million residents of Istanbul could be relocated from earthquake-prone areas to safer districts.
