The authorities intervened in the «student housing crisis»

Right up to the moment of the beginning of the new academic year – that is, now – it became not just difficult, but almost impossible for students to find a roof over their heads for rent. Dormitories and so-called «student houses» are overcrowded. So, with the announcement of the results of the entrance exams in Turkey, the housing issue became the number one problem for those who entered (or returned to study).

As of August 22, 850 631 students have successfully enrolled in the country and received distribution to the desired faculties in universities. And by last Sunday, August 28, the dormitories had to decide on the reception of residents.

However, the dormitories are not able to accommodate all applicants, and not even the majority. There are a number of options for students: in addition to state dormitories, it is also renting a residence, or sharing a house with other students, or renting a room.

But even the rooms are very expensive: for example, in Istanbul, the rent for students starts from 5,000 Turkish lira (TL) and is much higher. There are ads on the Internet that a room is for rent, approximately in the range of 2,750-3,250 TL; but on closer inspection they turn out to be actually closets, not even having a window.

Shishli, Besiktas, Kadikey and Uskyudar remain the districts with the highest rents for students in Istanbul. Even to rent a house is problematic: the 1 + 1 format – one bedroom and one living room – in the metropolis are rented for at least 8,000 TL. Despite the fact that a year ago, similar housing could be found for only 2,000 TL.

Prices for rental housing for students vary in Izmir from 3,000 to 11,000 TL, in Ankara – from 4,000 to 12,000 TL, in the «university town» of Eskisehir – from 3,000 to 7,000 TL, in Antalya – from 3,500 to 15,000 TL.

In some provinces, however, it is easier for students: for example, in Erzurum you can rent an apartment 2 + 1 for 1,250 TL, in Sivas – for 2,000-4,000 TL. But in general, this does not save the situation.

We remind you that in Alanya, by the beginning of the academic year, a new modern student dormitory was opened, designed only for girls.

Municipalities across the country are trying to solve the problem in different ways. One of it is the transformation of unclaimed offices into dormitories.
