Almost 40 percent of apartment buildings in Turkey need an earthquake strengthening

Of the 20 million Turkish apartment buildings, 7.5 million are seismically unsafe and in need of renovation. This statement, timed to coincide with World Housing Day, was made by Nimetullah Kaya, chairman of the board of directors of the construction and investment company Şua İnşaat (Istanbul). He stressed that the urban transformation of buildings in the seismic risk zone must be boosted across the country. According to the expert, more than 21 thousand seismic shocks have been recorded in Turkey since the beginning of 2020.

In Turkey, where 92 percent of territory is located in the zone of moderate and strong seismic risk, the social "Plan for the strengthening of cities" is being implemented. Earthquake resilience work continues in all parts of Istanbul as well as in other Turkish cities and provinces. As part of the program, brigades of municipal workers are replacing old facades made of low-quality metal and building mixtures based on sea sand for the latest reinforced concrete structures.
