According to the Presidential Decree published in official sources, the arrears of rent payments for February, March and April 2023 in the provinces where a state of emergency has been declared will be canceled.
The amounts of lease payments for these months are subject to refund or deduction, depending on the expiration or continuation of the lease agreement.
Also, in the earthquake-affected provinces, in case of disputes, tenants who have decided to terminate lease agreements ahead of schedule will be treated with understanding and will not charge fines or refuse to refund deposits. This means, including in court, if the case goes to court.
Over the past year, more and more attention in Turkey has been paid to protecting the rights of tenants.
So, owners who do not want to provide housing for rent to non-family citizens are waiting for sanctions; and those who excessively inflate the rent do not just risk fines, but may even go to jail.
Foreign homeowners, however, have nothing to fear: in order to avoid all these troubles, it is enough just to follow local legislation and not discriminate against those who want to rent your property by gender, age, family, occupation, etc.
